What is JCI?
JCI (Junior Chamber International) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to creating positive change in the world by developing and training young leaders who, in turn, are empowered to use their own innovative ideas, networks, and resources to create sustainable progress globally.

History of JCI
Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a non-profit organization of young active citizens ages 18 to 40, who are engaged and committed to creating positive change in their communities. Founded in 1915 by American business, professional and community leaders, JCI has nearly 200,000 members worldwide in more than 5,000 local chapters located in nearly 100 countries across the globe.
The history of JCI started when 32 businessmen met at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, United States on October 13th 1915. The concept of active citizenship had been launched with great force – young men and women working together to create sustainable impactful projects that transform their cities and countries for the betterment of its citizens.
In 1939 during World War II JCI was temporarily disbanded but soon after the first post-war national association was re-established under the name ‘Jaycees’ at Hempstead on Long Island, New York State.
Once again it became a beacon of light – marshalling enthusiasm for Action Together Now! By 1960 some 20 international associations had formed across Europe, North & South America linked by a common set of values – certainly this time felt like another turning point as much bigger ambitions were now within reach – a truly global organization beginning to take shape.
In 1990 with more than 200,000 members across 118 countries worldwide – the movement could no longer hide – it needed its own identity OneVoice! This signaled another new chapter – now famously known as ‘JCI’ – Junior Chamber International was born.
From then on forging ahead into an era where true sustainable social impact is possible through large scale locally adapted programs (like BeeHappyAfrica) coupled with digital inspiration & collaboration tools such as ThinkUpImpact deliver exponential social benefit at unprecedented speed.
JCI Mission and Vision
The Junior Chamber International (JCI) is founded on the idea of creating positive change in the community. This mission is embodied in JCI’s vision of providing “opportunities for young people to develop their leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and spirit of fellowship”.
The organization focuses on supporting young people by providing resources and assistance in areas such as education, volunteerism, youth employment and professional development.
To attain its vision, JCI outlines its mission statement: “We provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.” In other words, it aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference in their communities and worldwide.

JCI Programs and Initiatives
JCI, or Junior Chamber International, is an international non-governmental organization providing a platform for young people aged 18 to 40 to develop the leadership and entrepreneurial skills

JCI also provides the opportunity for participants to attend Trainings & Academics Programs such as the ‘Impact Initiative’ — Americas Summit and Certification Program; Annual Young Entrepreneurs Conference; Global Summit of Young Leaders; 20-in-20 Impact Project & Social Enterprise Challenge; Live Learning Forums; as well as a variety of other capacity building activities.
All of these programs are designed to foster creativity, innovation, collaboration and change through leadership training.
In addition, JCI facilitates exchange programs that allow participants at various levels from around the world to come together to share ideas and experiences on topics ranging from economic development, health care reform and social enterprise innovation.
Through these programs participants gain valuable insight into global challenges while learning from each other’s strengths and knowledge bases.

All JCI members have equal rights within JCI chapters and have a say in decisions regarding the chapter activities. Every Chapter is elected by general evaluation of all its members and it strives to reflect their ideas and perspectives in its projects and activities. Members are encouraged to take on active roles within the chapter’s organization and can run for office if they choose.
In addition to local-level involvement, all JCI members have access to exclusive programs, features, products, events, trainings, volunteer opportunities, networking opportunities with like-minded peers around the world – all geared toward helping them reach their goals as business owners or professionals looking for new challenges.
